Previously, the only product I’d tried from Perk!er was their white gluten-free loaf – which was the best gluten-free bread I have ever tasted! No chalky, dry texture you often find in gluten-free breads, great consistency and a proper white bread taste. So I was really looking forward to trying some of their other products…
First, I tried the Apple, Cinnamon & Raisin Porridge which was my absolute favourite. (You can see in the picture above, the box is almost empty!) It makes such a warm, comforting breakfast for this time of year and the flavours of the apple and cinnamon are perfectly balanced with just the right amount of sweetness, coming from the raisins. I cooked mine on the hob with some milk, which only took a couple of minutes but it also provides clear instructions for microwave cooking.
Ingredients: Gluten free oats, Raisins (16%), Dried Apples (6%), Cinnamon Powder (2%) – no nasties and very allergy friendly :-)
There is also an Oat-Free Apple Cinnamon & Raisin Porridge which is made with millet and buckwheat instead of oats. I was quite impressed with this porridge, it’s a really great option for those who can’t eat oats!
Ingredients: Millet flakes (43%), Buckwheat flakes (33%), Raisins (16%), Dried Apples (6%), Cinnamon Powder (2%)
The next morning, I tried the Fruity Berry Porridge with some almond milk. The taste reminded me of a strawberry milkshake, except less artificial tasting and not too sweet. I loved the bursts of cranberries!
Ingredients: Gluten free oats (76%), Raisins (13%), Cranberries (7%) (infused with sugar cane), Natural Strawberry flavour
The porridge pots are such a great idea! For all those people who can’t stomach breakfast early in the morning (like me) this would be great to bring to work for a mid-morning breakfast that will have you feeling “perkier” in no time (sorry) and very easy to prepare, with no mess involved :-) Just fill the pot up to the point indicated on the pot, place the lid back on top and wait a couple of minutes… then you have a lovely pot of warm porridge!
Lastly, I tried the Fruity Flakes. In the words of Tori Amos, I “never was a cornflake girl” so there was a good bet these weren’t going to be my favourite. I found the texture to be just like cornflakes or maybe more like Special K, so if you enjoy those cereals then you would enjoy this too.
Ingredients: Wholegrain flakes (75%) (Organic Brown Rice flour, Organic Buckwheat flour, Organic Cane Sugar, Brown Rice syrup, Salt), Dried Fruit (25%) (Raisins, Cranberry, Apple)
So overall, I loved what I tried. Perk!ers ingredients are minimal, honest and natural – which I love. I think they are probably the best gluten-free option on the market for porridge (and bread too! seriously… try some of their bread) I’m really keen to try some of these in baking but unfortunately didn’t get round to it this week. But I’m thinking of an apple crumble with the apple, raisin & cinnamon oats. Mmm!
