ResMed have recently made their S+ Sleep Tracker, the first contactless sleep tracking device, available in the UK! It’s now available on their website, Amazon and will be available in John Lewis and other retailers soon.
The S+ is a device that sits next to your bed and uses sophisticated algorithms that recognise movement and breathing patterns to determine different stages of sleep. To control the device, you can download an app on your phone which is connected to the device via Bluetooth. From here you can see information such as the temperature, light levels and your breathing pattern, track your sleeping habits plus a few other features that I’ll cover below.
From the moment you try out the device, you can quickly see how accurate it is by simply breathing slightly faster or slower and watching the tracker react on your phone’s screen. So the device is good at tracking your sleep but how can you use it to actively improve your sleep? See my guide below on how you can use this device to transform your sleeping habits…
Create the perfect sleeping environment
Once you’ve sets up your S+ device and synced it to your phone, you can use the S+ app to see the light, noise and temperature levels in your room. It might take a few nights to find out what works best for you personally but the optimal environment is to have as little light as possible, a slightly cool temperature of 16-18C / 60-64F and only gentle, relaxing noises.
Clear your mind
Instead of tossing and turning, worrying about your problems or thinking about what you have to do when you get up – get them out of your system and write them down or use the Mind Clear feature from the S+ which offers text and voice tools to jot down your to-do lists for the next day or whatever might be on your mind.
Once you’ve jotted everything down, it can be helpful to try meditating or using breathing exercises to focus on and help further clear your mind. See below for more on the Relax To Sleep function.
If you’re feeling stressed, anxious or are suffering from insomnia and need a little something to help you drift off, try using the Relax To Sleep feature which uses relaxing sounds to match your breathing. Slowly, the sounds slow down to help your breathing deepen, sending you into a more naturally relaxed state. You can set a timer to turn the sounds off so it doesn’t continue all night.
Identify your sleep issues
Review your results and get personalised feedback using the S+ Mentor. If you’ve had a bad night sleep, think back to what you did that day. Did you drink a lot of caffeine? Were you over stimulated close to bedtime? The device will ask you these quick questions, such as how much you had to drink and how much exercise you did during the day, before you go to sleep to get a more accurate account of how your sleep might be effected.
The S+ mentor will give you tricks, feedback and advice on improving you sleep based on your individual results. For example, if it took you a while to drift off, the S+ Mentor might suggest walking or using moderate exercise early in the day to help you sleep better. Once you start implementing these suggestions, you’re bound to see an improvement.
Wake up gently
My favourite and perhaps the most beneficial feature for me, personally is the Smart Alarm feature. The alarm is designed to wake you up at your lightest sleeping state so you wake up refreshed instead of groggy and sleepy. I ALWAYS had this problem and it made the mornings very difficult so this has gone a long way to giving me a good start to my day. This also helps you create a routine and helps your body adjust to a sleeping schedule.
Use the alarm feature to set the time you would ideally like to be awake by and then give yourself a window of 5 minutes to 1 hour before that time and choose the sound you would most like to be woken by. How about being gently woken by the sound of waves in the morning as you open your eyes from a peaceful sleep? Pretty idyllic, right?
Are you the kind of person who always tries to get the best score possible? After each night’s sleep, the S+ gives you a sleep score with in depth details, based on how well you’ve slept. If your score was low, use this to motivate you to get a better score next time!
