I don’t normally celebrate Halloween but the past few years I’ve decided to make it into an occasion where I have the perfect excuse to eat junk food and watch spooky films all day.
So that’s my idea of celebrating.
Although, when I say “spooky” films, I don’t do horror films because I’m a giant wuss. Instead, I watch more light-hearted films with a spooky theme or kid’s Halloween films. Think Hocus Pocus, The Burbs, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Young Frankenstein, Death Becomes Her, Edward Scissorhands etc etc. What are your favourite spooky films?
In this post I talk a bit about kombucha, my favourite way to flavour it and I’ve also got a giveaway for all my UK readers! Scroll down to find out more…
Mortier Pilon have provided easy instructions on how to make your own kombucha here and I like to leave mine to brew for a couple of weeks as I don’t like the taste to be too sweet, especially if I’m adding fruity flavours.
A word on sugar
White sugar is recommended as (I have learned from experience) brown sugar and alternative sugars simply don’t work as well, or at all. But don’t worry, this is simply to feed the SCOBY (not you!) and initiates fermentation.
The longer you leave it, the more the bacteria will eat the sugar and the less sweet your brew will be.
There are many ways to flavour your kombucha but my favourite way is to add fruit juice during a second fermentation. It’s easy and results in a fizzy, delicious kombucha!
Read more about secondary fermentation and flavouring here.
Blackberry & Ginger Kombucha
I chose to flavour this kombucha with blackberry & ginger. To do this, I juiced a punnet of blackberries with a thumb-sized piece of ginger and mixed it with some already brewed kombucha in a couple of bottles.
The ratio should be around 70-90% kombucha and 10-30% juice.
